My TLK - Types of Prides

Description

Rogue Pride
Likely the most common of all prides, they usually consist of 2 to 3 individuals usually all male. Commonly, these prides are formed by rogue males recently kicked out of their home prides, forming to create safety, companionship, and survival. The other, less common instance of these prides is a mated pair that broke away from their old pride for the freedom of forming their own. They are often seen with disdain or hatred for the simple fact they live like "barbarians", living by the old code of seeking to takeover a established pride and kill off all offspring in order to spread there own line throughout the group. Thus Rogue Prides are rarely seen by other prides, constantly on the move to avoid the dangers of the more territorial groups. Rarely are they welcomed within the boundaries of other prides or admitted to stay as permanent members.

Family Pride
More of a true pride then to rogue based one, these genuinely number out at 3 to 5 lions with a single male accompainied by some lionesses and their offspring. As the name suggests, these prides are usually made up of blood relatives with a father and mother at the lead, a sibling to one of teh pair and their accumilated children. The other type is what's refered to as a "Primal Pride": living by the more primative ways, a single male lordes over a harem of females, producing as many offspring before another male comes in to upsurp him. Prides like these can also be nomadic like Rogue Prides but most prefer to settle into a set territory, preferably away from ther prides. Though they are scorned like Rogue Prides, they are not treated with the same level of anamosity as bands of rogue males, typically as they are veiwed to be more "civilized". Despite this, they can still be seen as a threat towards other prides and like Rogue Prides, they are often chased off if encountered. Thus do these prides typically seek a more private existence away from others.

Small Kingdom Pride
A fairly decent sized pride, usually numbering at 5 to 10 members once more lead by a male along with females and their offspring filling up the remaining ranks. What most defines them compaired to a Family Pride is not only the larger numbers but a bigger territory to boot. The other exception is that these prides don't roam (normally), settling into a territory for good and choosing from amoungst them a King/Queen to take over ruling, starting a chain of inheritance. Often, the lead male in the pride may decide to take up only one mate as to prevent unintended inbreeding to occur. Prides like these are normally formed by a Family Pride having gained enough members to expand beyond there normal range or a Pride that has a territory whose resources can only supply a smaller number. Though they may attempt to interact with other kingdoms, unless they have a few generations of a set royal line, they are mostly ignored by more founded and respectable prides.

Large Kingdom Pride
A large (though not the largest) pride whose numbers typically average at 9 to 24 indiviuals on average, though some have been known to grow to 30+ in very rare cases. Most Large Kingdoms were infact Small Kingdoms that gained more stability in there choosen territory and gained greater numbers as a result. Prides like this have a royal line of rulers that extend back for several generations, the inheritance of a King/Queen passed onto their choosen heir (usually a child or a close family member). The rest of pride consist of mostly females of various ages (usually related) though a pride like this can likely house other males outside the one that takes the role of King/Prince Consort. Males like this either help the lionesses in the hunt or form into a special group called the "Border Warriors": assigned to assist the lead male of the territory in defending the borders from intruders and fighting battles with other enemy prides. Large Kingdom Prides have no trouble in interacting with other prides, greatly respected for there long standing lineage: often their interactions are of setting alliances (usually of setting up a betrothal for their heirs) though it is not uncommon to find ones intent on taking over and exanding off of preexisting prides. Most Large Kingdom Prides though prefer reaching out in peace rather then conquest, not wanting to lose the numbers they accumilated if they can help it.

Empire Pride
The largest and most rare of the prides, Empire Prides host large numbers of individuals in their ranks, numbering at anywhere from 20 to even 100+ strong. The genders within the pride are more mixed though there is usually a higher ratio of female to male. The entire pride is broken up into a complex ranking system that extends even into the royal family. Instead of a single ruling monarch that governs and looks after the entirety of kingdom, its is usually made up of a High King/Queen and their council of other reprentives, generals and advisors who all divide up the management of the empire. The council is usually of royal decent themselves but sometimes a "commoner" makes there way into the ranks. After the royal family, the ranks sytem becomes akin to normal prides with a male(s) in charge with the numerous pridesisters and their children. Depending on how large the empire territory and populace is, some times the lower rankes lions will form up into pride of their own and take over care of a small segement of territory within the whole. So long as they still swear loyalty to the Empire, they are generally ignored. Empire Prides normally been established for many years, their royal line decending back dozens of generations to a orginal ruler. It is for all these reasons and more that they are considered a frightening and inspiring force, only challenged by another Empire of equal standing. Empires that go to war against eachother are known to last several lifetimes and only end when massive amounts of causalties occur on both ends.
_______________
More reference guides for the world I'm creating in TLK. This time I thought I'd go into the various types of prides that exist within it. This hopefully gives you a good frame of mind for how the world is built up socially. That and whenever I bring up a term such as a "Family Pride" or such, you have a reference to go to.
It should be noted there are no Empire Prides living near the Pridelands though some come pretty darn close. The Valelands would likely count as a Empire Pride due to the massive size if it weren't for the fact that it was divided by power struggle. The Pridelands could probably become a Empire Pride if they weren't hindered by the surrounding prides along with desert terrian. There is one other pride that has come close to Empire Pride status, but they are hindered more from isolation, there is so much inbreeding that takes place that their populace has suffered greatly for it. They also happen to live to the far North East so we'll hear little of the them at any rate.
The Pridelands itself ranks as a Large Kingdom pride (especially after the intergration of the Outlanders into their ranks) and the surrounding lands are all Small Kingdom Prides. There are two other Prides that are at the level of Large Kingdom status but that will be talked about later. Much later. ;)
On a final note, this chart and text is supposed to act as a general guide to my world and not a absolute frame: there are some rather unusual prides out there. There are Family prides made up of entirely rogue males none of which are related (these are known as Bachelor Prides FYI). A Large Kingdom Pride reaching into the 20+ will likely expand out the territory and become a Empire pride (assuming they manage to maintain it and set up a proper monarchal system), but will likely still be refered to as a Large Kingdom till they have solidifed a system for generations. Some Prides though outwardly look to be seprate Small Kingdom Prides actually act like a Empire Pride with one Pride holding sway and the others acting independent but ultimately hold alligance to them. Probably the most notable is the Drifting Wind Pride: a pride that would be considered to be a Small Kingdom Pride (numbering at about 12 or so members) but instead of having a set territory, they wander the land, settling breifly in lands for a fews months/years till they move on to another place.
I think that's enough of my ramblings. Enjoy!
